Food Tracking, Really?
I get it. I SO get it! After learning about Protein, Carbs, and Fats it easy to feel overwhelmed by all the percentages and ratios. You might be wondering how you can keep it all straight, managing your macros, and asking: how am I going to conquer this?
Is it REALLY necessary to track every little thing? And I’m going to answer that by saying: That depends. Let me describe to you my story and my life-changing experience on this topic.
My Story
When I began my own wellness journey, I had just turned 40 and was desperate to stop the trend of weight gain, weariness, mood swings, the whole bit. I re-learned a few basics of how to eat, incorporated Herbalife into my diet, lost weight, felt light years better and generally speaking kept on my plan.
If I gained weight, I’d pull back a little, go back to basics and the weight came off. All was well with the world.
As I approached 49, I began to think that there was room for me to get some new results. After spending MOST of my 40’s not exercising, I found a fitness studio that I loved and was in a regular routine of workouts.
I began to take a look at how I was eating and recognized that there was room for improvement – not for the scale, but for physical stamina, appearance, long-term health, etc.
So, I grabbed the free version of MyFitnessPal and entered my vitals and began tracking my food. WOW! What an eye-opener! I was eating healthy meals/snacks…. or so I thought.
And what I learned was this: my portions were out of whack, and my numbers were also out of whack! I was working doubly hard to maintain my results, and if I just watched myself on a few fronts, I was going to be easily on my way to new results.
So here’s what I did: I began to actually read labels! We discuss this important skill in module 4 inside of our NewStart membership. Paid attention to portion sizes and WOW, I had room for SO MUCH inside of my daily meal plan!
First Things First
But the first step was understanding what was really happening, what I was willing to modify and importantly, what “modify” meant. In some cases, it meant trading one thing for another.
In other cases, it meant managing my portion size. Here’s an example of each.

A little ice cream never hurt anyone, right?
It worked!
I felt in control of my choices; kept my favorite foods on my plan; saw where I needed to modify; was truthful with myself. And I got the results I was looking for!
