Las Ramblas Trail is the most popular hiking trail in San Juan Capistrano. This hike offers some steep hills, which are perfect for cardio. But you will also get some amazing views of the coastline from Dana Point to Oceanside.
The main trail offers a 3.4-mile hike with a moderate difficulty level. Though there are other forks in the trail that leads to much longer hikes. Dogs, horses, and mountain bikes are all allowed on these trails though it is important to be aware of your surroundings.
Rattlesnakes, deer, and a rare bobcat have all been seen in these areas in the past.
Where to Hike in San Juan Capistrano | Patriot Trail
You won’t need to travel far for another moderate difficulty level trail. Patriot Trail can be found on Flagpole Hill with sweeping views. This hike is a 3.6-mile hike if you take this hike as a loop trail by adding in Cerro Rebal Trail.
While the trails in this area are open year-round, you will want to avoid rainy days. These trails are dirt trails, and you could end up with an extra 5 pounds on your feet with mud.
Dogs are allowed on all of these trails, keeping in mind that wildlife has been seen here before.
Where to Hike in San Juan Capistrano | Prima Desecha Trail
The Prima Desecha is often combined with Las Ramblas Trail and North Los Mares. The hike is a 5.3-mile one that has a trailhead in San Clemente. However, the trail itself ventures into San Juan Capistrano more so than San Clemente.
The elevation reaches 885 feet which means the views will be amazing as well. There are also ways to customize your hike by taking different trails which branch off of the Prima Desecha Trail.
You could potentially take a 10-mile or more hike if you take a different turn from one trail to another.
Where to Hike in San Juan Capistrano | San Juan Creek Trail
San Juan Creek Trail is a great and easy hike though it may not be considered a hike to some. Still, this is a great place to go for a walk and get outdoors. The trail is a 4-mile trail that ends (or starts) at Dana Point Beach.
Some of the views are great, and some are not. There is a sewage treatment facility nearby that could make for some bad conditions. Some may prefer to avoid this trail, but it is an easy place to start if you want to improve your hiking skills.
You could also ride a bike on this trail if you choose to, as parts of it are paved.
Where to Hike in San Juan Capistrano | Colinas Bluff Trail
Colinas Bluff Trail is technically in Laguna Niguel but close enough. There are ocean views and views of the 5 freeway that make for great night views. The total length of the trail is 6 miles, but there is no need to go from end to end.
One downside is that you will not venture off into nature much on this trail. The length of the trail keeps you in view of homes and civilization most of the time. Some people hike to escape all of that.
But if that doesn’t bother you or you just want to go for a nice walk with a friend, Colinas Bluff Trail is a great place to do it.
