Twelve Weeks In: Are Personalized Vitamins Worth It?

If you’ve had an afternoon where you feel off and can’t say why, this one’s for you.

Are personalized vitamins worth it? I get asked that a lot. My best answer didn’t come from a lab report. It came on a regular weekday afternoon, right after I’d run out.

If you’re new here, I started a personalized micronutrient formula from Bioniq in late July, after a short quiz. I wrote about that decision in The Vitamin Quiz Worth More Than It Costs, and about the first month in Micronutrients: The Cheat Code Nobody Told You About. This is the twelve-week check-in.

The Afternoon I Ran Out

Mid-afternoon is usually a good time of day for me. It’s when I give an hour to the last project of the day.

Not this time. I was home, working, and my mind kept wandering. I wanted something that asked less of me, like reading, or knitting, or sitting on the patio watching the birds at the fountain. I wasn’t sleepy. I just wasn’t engaged.

Nobody noticed, and I didn’t mention it. If you’d asked, I’d have told you, “I’m dragging tail and I just can’t put my finger on why. It’s so odd.”

It took some thinking before I made the connection. I hadn’t timed my reorder well, and my formula is made just for me, so a new order has to be produced, packaged, and shipped. By day 3, I suspected the missing scoops. On day 4, FedEx showed up early in the afternoon, and I took those two scoops right away… with water. No shake, no Gulp Method. I wanted to be back in business!

The next day, right as rain.

Was it the scoops, or just knowing I’d taken them? Who knows? What I do know is that one day I felt sluggish, and the next day I didn’t. There was only one significant change in my routine between the two.

And this is exactly why the monthly subscription exists. A few of my clients use it, so the next order is on its way before the last one runs out. Learn from my afternoon.

No Wow Moment, and That’s the Point

Personalized vitamins and minerals don’t do “flat stomach overnight.” Nobody’s stepping on the scale three pounds lighter after a week. This isn’t that.

The changes are gradual, and they build on each other. Twelve weeks in, I still have the clarity I noticed early on. I feel more satisfied. And better sleep has joined the list.

Most of us only notice a foundation when it’s missing. That’s what my afternoon was. Not a full slump. Just a little laggy, like I’m buffering a bit.

So if you’ve ever wondered how long vitamins take to work, here’s my answer from the inside: long enough that you stop noticing them, until the day you skip them.

There’s a simpler win, too. For 18 years I took my multivitamin three times a day, and I was fine with it. Now it’s two scoops, once in the morning. One less thing to remember twice a day… fabulous!

Build the Base First

After 18 years of doing this work, here’s how I think about supplements. Start with the base, and build from there.

First question: are you getting the macronutrients you need? Protein, carbs, and fats. That’s the part most of us at least think about. (I wrote about protein in The Basics Are Back.)

Second question: are you getting the micronutrients you need? That’s the part most of us skip. The scientific report behind the newest Dietary Guidelines for Americans says it plainly: “Calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and dietary fiber are underconsumed.”

And the food itself may be carrying less than it used to. One study compared USDA data for 43 garden crops from 1950 to 1999 and found declines in six nutrients, including calcium, iron, and vitamin C. That’s a big part of why I believe in some kind of supplementation, and why personalization matters so much to me. A personalized multivitamin starts with a short survey about your needs and goals, instead of one bottle built for everybody.

Third question: once that base is covered, what else do you want to focus on? Gut health, heart health, healthy lifespan. That’s where the rest of your stack comes from.

Reading Labels at Reorder Time

When it was time to reorder, I lined up my labels, read them side by side, and asked myself what I actually need on an ongoing basis.

What I found was supplement overlap. My old three-times-a-day multivitamin became one serving of Bioniq. The extra B vitamins went, because my formula already covers them. A few things stayed, because they do jobs my formula doesn’t. Restore is one of them. I take it every night for recovery, and it’s part of my Recovery Tools Bundle.

My supplement load is a little lighter now and, dare I say, more efficient. I like it better.

One note: if you take anything prescribed, check with your doctor before you change your stack.

When Your Goals Change, Your Formula Can Too

When it was time to reorder, Dave retook his quiz. His focus in the gym had shifted toward building more muscle, and he wanted a formula that matched. It took him maybe five minutes. New quiz, refined goals, new formula. No hours of research figuring out what to add or subtract. A thing of simplicity!

Then there’s a customer of mine who’s on a GLP-1 medication. She hadn’t noticed a physical difference from her formula, and she said so. I shared what I’d been reading: when your appetite is lighter, it’s easier to come up short on micronutrients. A 2025 joint advisory from four medical and nutrition societies lists the “prevention of micronutrient deficiencies” among its priorities for people on these medications.

She didn’t need convincing. She just planned her reorder. She feels secure knowing her bases are covered while her appetite is lighter and she builds her fitness with intention. That’s a good reason, too.

The Data Is the Guide

When I work one-on-one with someone, there’s one more tool I may bring in, if they feel it would be valuable. It’s called Pro2Col, a wellness tracking app I think of as a personalized health operating system. We build a wellness plan, pick a timeframe of up to twelve weeks, and choose the areas we want to focus on. I chose longevity, to line up with my Bioniq formula.

A typical check-in for me looks like this. I log my supplements and shakes. Table food gets logged with a photo. My Garmin syncs on its own. Then I add the lifestyle habits that keep mind and body in balance: sound therapy with my sound machine, prayer and meditation, fifteen minutes a day of real, quality conversation with someone, and my earthing mat. On Wednesdays, my knitting club counts too.

Protein is the toughest one for me. Following the macros in the app is how I actually hit my number.

I track 4 or 5 days out of 7. Consistent doesn’t always mean perfect.

If you read Take the Watch Off, you might be raising an eyebrow right now. Yes, my watch talks to this app. The difference is who’s deciding. The data is the guide. What I do with it on my end is my decision. It’s a game, not a judgment.

Pro2Col isn’t something I send out with a link. It comes with working together, and only if it fits you.

So, Are Personalized Vitamins Worth It?

For me, yes. Not because of a wow moment. Because of a quiet one. One serving instead of three. A lighter stack with no overlap. Better sleep. And an afternoon I notice when it’s missing.

That’s my twelve-week answer. I’ll keep telling you what I see.

And if you’ve been reading along for a while, quietly, I see you. Whenever you’re curious, here are two good places to start.

Curious what your own formula would look like? Take the quiz here. No pressure, just information. And set up the monthly subscription, so you’re not waiting on FedEx like I was.

Want a real starting point with me? The NewStart Navigator is $49. It’s a personalized video review from me plus a starter pack of samples, so you can try what I’d actually recommend for you.

Curious or committed, all are welcome.
