Staying Consistent When Life Shifts

If summer’s slower rhythm is already giving way to a fuller calendar, this one is for you.

I looked at my calendar a couple of days ago. Not because anything had gone wrong. Just to see what was already there.

Travel dates. Commitments already on the books. The regular rhythm of life picking back up, the way it always does this time of year.

I wasn’t letting anything drift. I was getting ahead of it, on purpose, before the season had a chance to fill in around me without my say.

The Season That Changes The Fastest

Every seasonal shift asks something of you, but summer sliding into fall asks for more than most.

Summer has its own looser rhythm. Fewer hard timelines. Slower mornings some days. A vacation, or at least the memory of one. Then, almost overnight, that rhythm ends. Academic life picks back up, however that looks for your family. Sports and activities that had been on pause start filling the calendar again. The pace changes. The priorities shift. And it can feel like it happened while you weren’t looking.

The days get shorter right around the same time, which never helps. Less daylight to work with. Fewer hours to fit in a workout, get dinner on the table, or just catch your breath before the next thing starts.

Grown Kids, Same Feeling

My own kids are grown and adulting now. I don’t have a first day of school on my calendar anymore. But I still feel this shift, every year, right around now.

That tells me something. This isn’t just a parenting problem. It’s a rhythm problem. The season changes, the pace changes with it, and if you don’t take a look on purpose, it takes the look for you.

Blend, Don’t Overhaul

Here’s what I’ve learned. A shift like this isn’t a reason to start over. It’s a reason to blend.

Back in July, I did a bit of mental work. I recalibrated. Found a rhythm that actually fit my body, my energy, my life. That work doesn’t disappear just because the season changed. It’s still true. It just needs to flex.

When your schedule shifts, it’s rarely time to add more. It’s time to look at what’s already working and ask what wants to be replaced, or refined, so it fits the life you’re living now. Not the life you had in June.

What I Actually Changed

Here’s what that looked like for me this time.

I’d been doing fasted workouts for a while. I went back to an old rhythm I’d forgotten I loved: 7.5 grams of protein before I train. Half a serving of a zero sugar protein snack, BCAAs, creatine, and a Prepare from H24. Same slot in my morning. Different fuel going in. If you want the exact combination, here’s the morning cocktail bundle I use now.

The difference showed up fast. Higher intensity. Heavier lifts. Steeper hills on my power walks. More energy, and this feeling stayed consistent, day after day.

Then there’s my multivitamin, and this one gets a little reverence.

I’ve taken one three times a day, every day, for longer than I’ll admit to in print. Twenty-two vitamins and minerals, off the shelf, but a good one. High quality. And I always knew when I missed a serving, because I’d feel the energy lull by the end of the day.

But the multi that worked for me at 40 isn’t necessarily the multi I need now. So I made the swap. A quick survey on my age, weight, nutrition, hydration, and fitness patterns got me to a personalized formulation through Bioniq, twenty-two (or twenty-three, depending on my survey responses) vitamins and minerals balanced for me, personally, based on my own answers. I got to choose my own focus areas too; I chose healthy lifespan and building muscle.

Nothing dramatic seemed to happen. Until I realized my sleep had gotten deeper. My afternoons had more focus in them. And there was a sense of satisfaction that felt… heightened, somehow.

Maybe it was dramatic after all. A multivitamin is just a multivitamin, until it isn’t.

My morning shake changed too. I moved to Life I/O Helio, a superfoods shake with 30 grams of protein from whey and pea, plus ashwagandha, lion’s mane, polyphenols from grapeseed extract, pomegranate and green tea extract. There’s a methylation cassette with vitamin B9, B12 and betaine. It’s a lot in one glass. And…it makes me feel incredible.

Even my workout order changed. Same number of sessions. Just rearranged so the pattern of work and recovery actually fits how my body responds right now.

None of that was an overhaul. It was a blend. I kept what worked and upgraded for upgraded results.

Even Dave Does This

Dave does this too, and not just with wellness.

He was scheduled to swim eighteen hundred yards this morning. Instead I got a text. “ Slight change of plans,” he said. “Working on flip turns and bilateral breathing today. Just didn’t feel like banging out lap after lap.”

He wasn’t skipping the workout. Dave was honest about where his head was, and he swapped in skills work he’d never made time for. He still showed up. He just showed up differently.

That’s the real skill. Staying available to adjust the plan instead of abandoning it.

Life shifting doesn’t call for a new plan. It calls for permission to adjust the one you have.

If You Missed The July Reset

If you were part of the mid-year reset last month and you’re already feeling the season pull at what you built, you don’t have to rebuild it from nothing. Pull the Recalibration Worksheet back out. Ask it the same three questions: what to keep, what to swap, what to let go of for now.

And if you didn’t get to it in July, that’s alright too. That worksheet works just as well as a starting point right now, one small adjustment at a time.

If you want a more personal starting point, the Navigator is worth a look too. It’s a real conversation about what fits your life today, not a generic plan. Either way, welcome to the new season. Forget the overhaul. Just blend.
